It frustrates me that internet marketing is over-complicated by the so called “gurus” out there.
Having come in to internet marketing knowing absolutely nothing about it 5 years ago, one of the real reasons that I struggled for a long time was that too many people were over-complicating the system.
Today I want to talk a little about the keys to having success in internet marketing and to show you that it’s really not difficult to get started.
My business is based around SEO (search engine optimization). As such, I rely on getting top rankings in Google in order to receive visitors to my websites. But top rankings by themselves are not enough…we need top rankings for keywords that have buyers and a decent search volume.
It’s no good ranking #1 for a keyword that only gets 5 people searching for it each day…this will never make you much money (if any). We need good rankings for keywords that have people searching for them.
You can get a good idea of the search volume by looking at any good keyword research tool, Google offers a free tool which you can use here:
Once you know there are enough people searching for a keyword every day, and you know the keyword has commercial intent, you’re half way there.
Next you need to build a simple website (I use WordPress) targeting your keywords. The key here is to ensure that you provide good content that people will actually find useful.
Once you’ve identified your keywords and created a website, it’s time to start a campaign to get top rankings in Google – and by top, I mean top 3. Statistics show that around 70% of website users visit the top 3 results in Google, it’s important to make sure you get into the top 3 as anything below that will mean you’re missing out on a lot of traffic.
The easiest way to move up the rankings in Google is to plan a link building campaign that leverages a wide variety of different types of links. I like to build a range of blog links, forum links, article marketing links, high PR links, web 2.0 links and social bookmarking links. These provide the optimum mix of links and will help you boost your rankings in Google.
As you move up the rankings (which can sometimes take a few weeks) you’ll start to receive more and more traffic to your website. You need to present an offer or service targeted to that traffics need and then sales will come in on autopilot. Simple.
Once you have top 3 rankings, repeat the process on another website.

4. Repeat the process.
